Bell Mountain, located in Hiawasee Georgia is a fasicating, unique place to visit. This mountain has a 3,424 ft elevation with a 360 degree view overlooking Hiawasee and Lake Chatuge. The top of the mountain consist of a parking lot and steps leading up to a platform located at the top point of the mountain. The back side of the moutain is a rock face that is a more-exaggerated drop off than it's other sides.
A Brief History
In the 1960's Bell Mountain was mined by some men from a nearby town, Murphy North Carolina, in order to obtain some minerals. This attempt failed, but not without leaving a scar in the mountain and erosion that taints the waters of the nearby Lake Chatuge.
Bell Mountain was eventually purchased by Hal Herron who tried to preserve the mountain and shelter it from any more damage. In 2016 Mr. Herron gifted Bell Mountain to Town's Country to create an historical site.
During it's earlly days of discovery Bell Mountain was accessible only by a stringent hike to the top. Later it became a favorite for off road jeep drivers. Amidst a controversy, a paved road was eventually built that led to the top of the mountain.
My Visit to the Mountain
I have actually visited Bell Mountian twice and I am sure I will be back bringing more friends and loved ones to enjoy the view and majesty of the mountain. Both of my visits I was lucky enought to have clear skies and I could see for miles and miles. On my second, which I took my boyfriend with me, we were able to get drone footage and see the mountain from a point of view that cannot be senn simply by driving to the top.
The mountain tends to stay pretty busy with visitors, but on occasion you may luck out an be the only person at the top and emjoy the quiet solitude while you look out over the mountains and surrouding area.
Enjoy the photos and drone footage taken from Bell Mountain, and if you have the opportunity to out and explore, add Bell Mountain to your list of destinations!
